UEM 101: Understanding the Technology Behind Your Technology

LISTEN TO THE AI OVERVIEW
Jump to: INTRO UEM Defined The Only Question That Matters Device Management How TRG Helps

Step foot on any warehouse floor and you'll see them everywhere.

Scanners in workers' hands, printers churning out labels, tablets mounted on forklifts and kiosks managing all sorts of important tasks.

There are “endpoints”—the devices that power modern supply chains.

When they work, the whole place hums.

When they don't—things can grind to a halt very quickly.

That’s why we take Unified Endpoint Management (UEM) so seriously.

UEM Defined

In plain terms, UEM means managing any device with a chip in it across its entire lifecycle: scanners, tablets, PCs, POS terminals, etc. If it connects, configures or collects data, UEM can manage it.

For years, this space was known as MDM (Mobile Device Management). But the name needed to keep up with the technology. Today it's not just about phones and tablets. It's about every endpoint in the enterprise, from POS systems in a retail setting to rugged scanners in a warehouse.

"When you talk about UEM, you're really talking about the brain of the operation," said TRG Vice President of Technology Dave Foyer. "It's what keeps the entire fleet online, visible, secure and functioning."

The Only Question That Matters

Foyer often starts his UEM conversations with a simple question:

How are you managing all your devices at this exact moment?

It’s a very simple question, but the answers reveal a lot.

Some responders talk about detailed inventories and strict protocols. Others aren’t even sure what devices they have, let alone where they are or what software versions they’re running.

Wherever you fall on this spectrum, you need an honest answer to this question before you can make progress on other problems, including:

  • Outages tied to devices

  • Inconsistent OS updates and patching

  • Broken devices during a shift

  • Inconsistent security across all devices

The Real Costs of Bad Device Management

Poorly managed (or unmanaged) devices can experience problems at the worst possible times, whether it’s peak season or right in the middle of a critical audit.

But the real cost isn't the devices themselves; it's the way these disruptions tend to cascade through operations, impacting productivity, accuracy and ultimately customer satisfaction.

Consider just a few of these potential consequences:

  • IT teams spend hours manually configuring devices instead of focusing on strategic initiatives

  • Security vulnerabilities go unpatched, exposing the network to threats

  • Lost or stolen devices become liability issues without remote wipe capabilities

  • Downtime extends because no one truly knows which devices are affected or where they are

  • Compliance failures occur without a viable audit trail

A rock-solid UEM solution is how you move from reactive response to proactive management. Instead of discovering problems after the room is already on fire, you can see issues before they impact operations.

Even better, you can fix most of them remotely.

How TRG Helps

Not only does TRG’s sample distribution system showcase our automation expertise, it also shows how a variety of other services and solutions connect into a comprehensive distribution workflow, including:

  • Media & Consumables

  • Robotics & Automation

  • Endpoint Procurement

  • Unified Endpoint Management

Because the best tracking system in the world fails if the labels are junk, the most sophisticated RFID workflow breaks down if your readers aren't properly managed and the tightest receiving protocols fall apart fast when you can’t trust your devices.

This integrated approach is what allows our customers to manage every endpoint they have using TRG as their sole partner.

But the best way to understand modern inventory tracking isn't through feature comparisons or technical specifications; it's by watching how product flows through an actual distribution workflow.

That's exactly what TRG will be demonstrating at MODEX 2026.
