From Manual Bottlenecks To Scalable Control

“Our relationship with TRG extends far beyond that of a traditional vendor. Their support with our SOTI MDM platform, assistance in developing and maintaining our golden builds, and reliable partnership in meeting our hardware purchasing and deployment needs have made them a valuable extension of our team. We appreciate their responsiveness, expertise, and commitment to helping us achieve our operational goals, and we look forward to continuing our successful partnership.”

- LeAnn Wolabaugh, WMS Manager, Covenant Logistics

The Bottom Line

How TRG is Helping Covenant Logistics Transform Device Management at Scale

Covenant Logistics, a national third-party logistics provider managing over 300 Zebra Android devices across multiple warehouse locations, was facing a growing operational bottleneck driven by fully manual device provisioning and the absence of centralized endpoint management.

Each device required hands-on configuration by WMS resources, including manual lockdown, Velocity profile installation and site-specific setup. This process not only consumed 2–3 hours per device, but also introduced variability, human error and delays tied to shipping devices to technical resources before deployment. With no remote access capability, even minor issues required physical intervention, creating additional downtime, travel costs and support strain.

The challenge intensified with the transition to Android 13, which introduced stricter security requirements that further complicated application deployment and WMS authentication. As device counts increased and warehouse operations scaled, this manual approach became unsustainable and a barrier to growth.

By implementing SOTI MobiControl, Covenant Logistics is:

  • Automating device provisioning with preconfigured “Golden Path” profiles
  • Enabling real-time remote troubleshooting and support
  • Standardizing configurations across all sites and devices
  • Eliminating the need for centralized staging by shipping devices directly to warehouses
  • Reducing deployment time from hours to under 15 minutes per device

The result is a modern, scalable device management framework that reduces IT workload, improves operational consistency and positions Covenant to expand its warehouse network without increasing overhead or complexity.

The Client

Covenant Logistics is a rapidly growing third-party logistics provider operating across multiple warehouse locations, supported by a fleet of Zebra Android devices used for their WMS operations.

As the business scaled, its technology and device management approach did not keep pace. A lean WMS team remained responsible for provisioning and supporting over 300 devices through manual, hands-on processes, creating inefficiencies and inconsistencies across sites.

With increasing device volume, Android platform changes and no centralized management capability, the organization faced a growing challenge: how to support expansion without overextending IT resources or impacting operational performance.

The Challenge

The biggest challenge wasn’t visibility; it was manual control at scale. With no centralized management solution, over 300 Zebra Android devices had to be configured one at a time, with no ability to track, update or support them remotely.

Every setup, update or issue required hands-on intervention, leading to inconsistent configurations, delays and increasing IT workload. Devices often had to be shipped between locations for setup or repair, adding downtime and slowing operations.

With added complexity from Android 13 and no remote management capability, this approach became unsustainable, limiting the organization’s ability to scale efficiently.

What We Did

The TRG UEM team began with a simple question: how are your devices being managed today?

The answer quickly revealed a gap - there was no consistent, scalable approach in place.

From there, we developed a structured program to address immediate challenges while building a standardized, scalable foundation for device management, rolling it out one warehouse at a time.

Solving Device Identity.

Using SOTI as the backbone, our UEM built a system that maintains each device’s unique WMS identifier through the repair cycle. Now, when a device comes back from service and powers on, it automatically grabs its ID, identifies itself to the warehouse management system and pulls down its profile and settings. No manual re-entry. No idle time. The device is ready to work as soon as it’s back in a worker’s hands. The time savings here pretty much speak for themselves.

Building Golden Images.

The client runs multiple models of Zebra handheld scanners across their warehouses, and we built a complete golden image for each model. These preconfigured device profiles can be deployed by scanning a single barcode. Just pick up a device, scan the code and the scanner is configured with the right settings, the right apps and the right look and feel for its specific role. Deployments that used to take hours of manual IT configuration now take minutes.

Delivering Real Visibility.

For the first time in a long time, this client is building an accurate picture of what they actually have. As devices are enrolled into SOTI across each site, they gain more and more visibility into device counts, device health, software versions and location — the kind of basic fleet intelligence that are becoming table stakes for modern players in the T&L space.

Where We Are Now

Covenant Logistics has successfully completed the migration of its RF device fleet onto SOTI, bringing over 300 Zebra Android devices under centralized management and control. This transition has eliminated manual provisioning, enabled remote support and standardized configurations across all sites, significantly reducing IT workload and improving device consistency in the field.

With the RF environment now stabilized, Covenant has established a scalable foundation for managing warehouse technology at enterprise scale. The next phase will focus on extending this same level of visibility and control to their label printers, further streamlining operations and reducing downtime.

Looking ahead, this approach positions Covenant to scale its operations without scaling IT complexity - creating a repeatable, standardized model for managing any endpoint across the warehouse network.

The Big Picture

While the journey is ongoing, the direction is clear.

  • A 3PL operation that once relied on manual, site-by-site device management now has centralized control of over 300 devices across its network.
  • Processes that required hours of hands-on configuration are now automated and standardized.
  • Issues that once required physical intervention can now be resolved remotely in real time.

This transformation isn’t just about improving device management - it’s about building a scalable operating model.

At TRG, we deliver the structure, visibility and control needed to support growth - helping organizations modernize operations without increasing complexity.

If you’re managing devices across multiple sites and feeling the strain of manual processes, chances are we’ve seen your challenge before and we know how to solve it.
